The Law of the XII Tables (in Latin : Lex Dvodecim Tabvlarvm or simply Dvodecim Tabvlae) was the first body of written Roman law.Their writing is the founding act of the ius scriptumwritten law.
This legislation was drawn up to protect plebeians from the arbitrariness of magistrates. In Roman eyes, it quickly became the source of all law.
Its longevity was exceptional: it remained in force for ten centuries (until the Justinian compilations in 529 AD).
In addition, the Law of the XII Tables was adopted according to a new procedure: it was voted by the comices (assemblies of all citizens), thus marking the beginning of the people’s intervention in the voting of the law.
Later laws were also submitted to the vote of the comices.
In all, some 800 laws were passed during the 5 centuries of the Republic.
